Mahakhumb is the biggest gathering in the world which happen in India every 144 years. This time it happened In January 2025 for 6 weeks in Prayagraj city in India at the bank of river Ganaga . India has the population of 1,400 million.  680 million Indians pilgrims participated in this Mahakumb Mela.  Aprox 50% of Indian travelled to this town in UP state to have a holy dip on a bank of Ganga where 3 holy Indian rivers meet.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, held in Prayagraj, is a special event due to a rare celestial alignment that occurs once every 144 years, making it a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual gathering for millions seeking purification and liberation. Prayagraj is one of the oldest and holiest cities in Hindu tradition, with references in ancient texts like the Vedas and Puranas. Hindus believe that bathing at the Sangam during Kumbh Mela washes away sins and helps attain moksha (liberation).

This year’s event is particularly significant because it coincides with a rare planetary configuration, which is believed to amplify the spiritual power of the occasion. The Maha Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years, but the specific alignment that makes this year’s event special happens only once every 144 years

World’s biggest gathering

There are many holy gathering happening around the world every year. Hajj in in Mecca ( Saudi Arab) , Shia pilgrims in Karabala ( Iraq ) , Pope Mass in Manila ( Philipine ) . But none match the holy gathering of Indian Mahakumbh . Below is major gathering happened around the world previously –

 The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj was an extraordinary event, drawing an estimated 680 million devotees over its 45-day duration from January 13 to February 26, 2025 . This massive turnout solidified its status as the largest human gathering in recorded history.​

Mahakumbh Budget & Revenue

The Uttar Pradesh government allocated ₹25,000 Million for the preparations of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj. Additionally, the central government approved a special grant of ₹21,000 Million  for the event. Overall, the combined funding from both the state and central governments amounted to ₹46,000 Million to support the successful organization of this grand event.​

​The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj generated substantial economic activity, with estimates ranging from ₹2 lakh crore to ₹4 lakh crore. The Uttar Pradesh government reported an economic boost of over ₹4lakh crore ( 100 times than investment ) . This revenue was generated across various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, retail, and local services.

Major religious Event

The event attracted over 680 Million devotees over 45 days, with significant spending on accommodations, food, transportation, religious items, and local services. On average, daily attendance ranged between 65 to 70 million people, with peaks during significant bathing days like Maghi Purnima, when over 76 million devotees participated in ritual dips at the Triveni Sangam in a day . The event’s global significance was underscored by the participation of pilgrims from numerous countries, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Russia, the United States, and even Pakistan .

Kumbh Management

Managing such a vast congregation of 680 Millions ( Double the population of USA ) required extensive logistical planning. A temporary township was erected .  Over 13,000 trains, including 3,000 special services, were deployed to accommodate the influx of pilgrims . Existing city Airport was upgraded to increase the capacity . 450km internal / external roads were built & upgraded .

Tent City

To manage a huge gathering in a single spot a tent city spanning approximately 4,000 hectares was erected. The tent city comprises around 150,000 tents and an equal number of toilets to serve the vast number of attendees.  Scale and Infrastructure

30 pontoon bridges, extensive sanitation facilities, and robust security measures with 50,000 personnel deployed. Advanced technologies like AI-powered cameras and drones have been implemented for crowd management and safety.

Amenities and Services

The tent city is equipped with 24/7 medical services, including first aid stations and ambulances. Many tents are situated in picturesque locations, offering stunning views of the holy rivers. The environment provides a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling Mela grounds

To accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims during Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, the Uttar Pradesh government implemented extensive other arrangements across infrastructure, transportation, sanitation, security, and technology.​

Infrastructure & Accommodation

Temporary City: A 4,000-hectare tent city was established, featuring approximately 150,000 tents to house pilgrims.​

Ghats & Sectors: The ghats spanned 12 km, and the area was divided into 25 sectors for efficient management.​

Sanitation Facilities: Around 150,000 toilets and urinals were installed, maintained by 10,000 sanitation workers.​

River Cleanliness: 500 Men and water cleaning machines were deployed to maintain the sanctity of the river during the event.

Transportation & Connectivity

Rail Services: Indian Railways operated approximately 360 trains, including 190 special trains, to manage the surge in pilgrims.​

Road Infrastructure: Over 450 km of roads were constructed or upgraded, and 1,850 hectares were designated for parking.​

Air Connectivity: Prayagraj Airport which was upgraded with Rs 3,000 Million , facilitated daily flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. ​

River Services : 100s of Boats was pressed in to service to ferry piligrims for holly dip and a tour in Ganaga.

Security & Safety Measures

Personnel Deployment: Approximately 40,000 police officers, along with personnel from UP-PAC, NDRF, and Central Armed Police Forces, were deployed.​

Surveillance: A network of around 2,300 cameras provided 24/7 monitoring, supplemented by underwater drones for recovery operations.​

Fire Safety: The fire department was equipped with 351 firefighting vehicles, over 2,000 personnel, and advanced equipment like articulating water towers.​

Lost & Found Centers: Ten centers were established across various sectors, utilizing digital registration and regular announcements to reunite missing individuals with their families. ​

During Maha Kumbh 2025 government established 10 digital lost and found centers, across the Mela grounds. These centers were strategically located to assist in reuniting lost individuals with their families amidst the massive gathering of pilgrims

Each center was equipped with advanced technologies, including AI-powered facial recognition and digital registration systems, to expedite the process of locating and reuniting separated individuals. Additionally, these centres provided essential amenities such as shelter, food, and medical assistance to those awaiting reunification

Technology & Digital Services

Mobile Application: A dedicated app was launched to provide pilgrims with information on routes, facilities, and real-time updates.​

AI & Chatbots: Artificial intelligence tools and chatbots were employed to assist visitors with queries and navigation.

Digital Announcements: Regular audio announcements and social media messages were used to disseminate important information and updates. ​

During period when Mahakubh was happening in India , I asked the peoples who could not go for Kumbh , almost all wanted to visit but could not due to other engagement , few with the tears in the eyes. India being so vast, varied and divided comes together as one in search of its spiritual soul.

As Holy Mecca pilgrim in Saudi Arab unite Muslims of the world , Pop unite Christians , the Mahakumbh in India did unites Hindus of the world. Hindus from all corners of India irrespective of their caste and status joined together for spiritual purification , cleanse sins and achieve moksha at the bank of Ganga for a Holy dip.
